About The Customer
Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana is a non-profit organization that provides job training, employment placement services, and other community-based programs for people who have barriers preventing them from otherwise obtaining a job. The organization has over 3,100 employees in Central Indiana and is a $100 Million+ organization. It operates over 50 stores in the central Indiana region and also operates 10 high schools with 3,300 students. In 2012, the organization had $5.6 million sales transactions and $1.9 million donation transactions, making it one of the largest Goodwills in the US.
The Challenge
Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana was facing a challenge with their disaster recovery (DR) plan. They had spent nearly $250,000 building a traditional DR solution that would adequately protect their critical applications. However, the solution required a high level of manual upkeep and was difficult to test. The recovery environment was growing more and more out of sync with the production environment each day, which decreased the likelihood of a smooth and successful recovery. When a capital investment was required in production, a similar investment was required in the DR environment. When a change was made to production, it had to be carried out in the DR environment as well. Staff members were spending too much time managing two environments.
The Solution
Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana chose to implement Bluelock’s Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service solution because of its dynamic nature and ability to keep the recovery environment in sync with the production environment on a continuous basis without requiring manual work from their team. The solution ensures any changes made to the production environment are immediately replicated to the recovery environment, providing the organization with the agility and elasticity it needs. To implement the solution, they also used tw telecom’s Intelligent Network, which gives users a scalable, private network solution in which users can turn the bandwidth up or down when needed, paying only for what they use, and allowing those previous traffic bottlenecks to flow freely. The solution enables fast replication to the recovery target to seed the initial environment and speedy failback after a disaster.
Operational Impact
  • The recovery environment is kept in sync with the production environment on a continuous basis without requiring manual work from the team.
  • The solution provides the organization with the agility and elasticity it needs.
  • The solution enables fast replication to the recovery target to seed the initial environment and speedy failback after a disaster.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The organization was able to increase their DRaaS footprint by eight times, protecting dozens of applications.
  • When their recovery environment footprint increased by eight times, their bill at the end of the month only increased by about two times.
