About The Customer
GetYourGuide is a travel experience booking platform that allows individuals to book travel experiences at over 7,500 destinations worldwide. From skip-the-line tickets to the top of the Eiffel Tower, to a walking tour through the ruins of Rome, more than 15 million individuals use GetYourGuide each month. Since its founding in 2009, travelers from more than 170 countries have used GetYourGuide to book over 20 million tours, activities, and attraction tickets. With more than 15 million monthly active users, GetYourGuide's business depends on making sure they are able to book the experience they want, when they want. The only quantitative way to know if they are meeting consumer needs and desires, is through data.
The Challenge
GetYourGuide, a travel experience booking platform, was facing challenges with its open source Relational Online Analytical Processing (ROLAP) cube. The tool required basic database skills to use, limiting the number of employees who could utilize it. As the company expanded, data volumes and the number of employees needing insights increased, resulting in sluggish query performance and an increase in time-outs. This led to an overburdened Data Platform team, as they were inundated with ad-hoc requests for insights. The team realized that they needed a new solution that could scale with the company's growth and make data accessible to all team members.
The Solution
GetYourGuide turned to Looker, a modern platform for data that delivers data analytics and business insights to every department at the point of decision. Looker's HTML5-based interface was accessible from any location and any web-enabled device, meeting GetYourGuide's first criterion of bringing data to every team member. Looker also provided productivity gains for the Data Platform team. With Looker's easy-to-use interface and LookML, Looker's SQL abstraction layer, the Data Platform team was able to answer user requests in less than an hour, a process that previously could take weeks. In less than a month, with only one engineer's time, GetYourGuide was able to migrate all of its critical data points to Looker.
