About The Customer
Future Intelligence Ltd. is a telecom engineering SME based in Greece. Founded in 2009, the company offers an integrated suite of remote management solutions for devices in a smart city environment based on wireless media and telemetry applications. The company focuses on two main lines of business: long- and short-range communications. Future Intelligence was founded by three visionary engineers fresh out of Brunel University in London. Their idea was to provide complete solutions for smart cities and agriculture, including lighting, traffic, parking, water and irrigation management, and measuring weather conditions.
The Challenge
Future Intelligence Ltd., a telecom engineering SME based in Greece, was facing challenges with spiraling street lighting costs and the need to improve public safety and protect the environment. The company saw an opportunity to improve municipal operations via the Internet of Things (IoT). Street lighting is an essential community service, but it can consume up to 40 percent of a municipality’s budget. Moreover, in many cases, lighting is not energy efficient, adding to greenhouse gas concerns and pollution. These challenges led municipalities to transform into smart cities, and they found an ideal way to make that change: Future Intelligence built on Software AG’s Cumulocity IoT.
The Solution
Future Intelligence chose Cumulocity IoT as their partner to reach their goal of providing dedicated solutions for smart cities and agriculture. The Future Intelligence smart lighting application—called FINoTTM Lighting— adds intelligence to lighting systems, whether they are on a road, in a park or on an industrial estate. The app allows municipal or company operators to manage lighting conditions depending upon weather, temperature, movement of people or vehicles, or any combination of these, through a flexible cloud-based interface. The FINoTTM Smart Lighting solution is also suitable for monitoring environmental conditions, facility control, resource management and safety. With Cumulocity IoT as part of the solution, smart cities have access to device management, user management, alerts, workflows, location management, real-time data, and custom maps.

Buoy Status Monitoring with LoRa
The Netherlands are well-known for their inland waterways, canals, sluices and of course port activities. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure indicates that there are thousands of buoys and fixed items in and near water environments that would profit from IoT monitoring. One of the problems with buoys for example, is that they get hit by ships and the anchor cable breaks. Without connectivity, it takes quite some time to find out that something has happened with that buoy. Not to mention the costs of renting a boat to go to the buoy to fix it.
