Evrensel Newspaper is a daily newspaper for the working class in Turkey. It has been publishing for 25 years as a print edition and 24 years as a website. The main source of website traffic comes from Turkey, but the newspaper also has readers in other European countries and the US. Evrensel wanted to keep their message and brand consistent while improving their mobile platform for better performance, speed, and access to new formats like AMP.
The Challenge
Evrensel Newspaper, a daily newspaper for the working class in Turkey, faced a challenge in adapting to the mobile revolution. The publisher had built a significant audience before the advent of mobile technology and was wary of alienating its loyal readers with drastic changes. However, they also recognized the risk of being left behind by failing to adapt to new technologies. Evrensel sought a mobile platform that would enhance their performance and speed, provide access to new formats like AMP, but would not fundamentally alter their identity as a newspaper or a brand.
The Solution
Marfeel provided a solution in the form of its mobile platform, based on an ultralight Progressive Web App (PWA). This, combined with service workers, allowed for a rich, professional news experience that felt instant and app-like, even in unstable conditions. By limiting third-party Javascript and optimizing page load along the same principles as Core Web Vitals, Marfeel was able to offer Evrensel more functionality at faster speeds. In addition to a faster mobile experience, Marfeel generated monetized AMP versions, added push notifications, a CMP, and connected their AI-powered monetization system. This system delivers the ultimate balance between content and advertising, from their network of SSPs and ad networks.
