Erie Insurance is a property and casualty insurance provider with 4,400 employees and $4.8 billion in annual revenue. The company offers auto, home, business, and life insurance to customers in 11 states. Founded in 1925, Erie Insurance currently has more than four million policies in force. The company was named a 2012 Customer Service Champion by J.D. Power and Associates, and is ranked among Fortune Magazine’s 500 largest U.S. companies in terms of revenue. In 2009, new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Terrence W. Cavanaugh began laying the groundwork for a new strategy that involved making strategic use of information to improve organizational performance.
The Challenge
Erie Insurance, a multi-line insurance provider, was looking to execute on the new CEO’s vision to make more strategic use of data to improve organizational performance. The CEO, Terrence W. Cavanaugh, wanted to enable users to better leverage the wealth of data the company maintained. His goal was to deploy a series of internal and external dashboards that would support decision-making and deliver information across all levels of the business. The challenge was to create a web-based reporting environment that would allow thousands of authorized employees to monitor approximately 75 key performance indicators (KPIs) across critical domains such as customers, finance, service productivity, human resources, and distribution.
The Solution
In response to the CEO's vision, Erie’s Information Management and Reporting (IMNR) team created a web-based reporting environment called Erie Performance Reports. This application was built on the WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) platform from Information Builders and leverages Active Technologies. It allows thousands of authorized employees, mostly mid-level managers, to monitor approximately 75 key performance indicators (KPIs) across critical domains such as customers, finance, service productivity, human resources, and distribution. Dashboards to support other functional areas, including sales and actuarial, were also created. An executive dashboard known as Enterprise Reporting provides senior-level management with much of the same information contained in Erie Performance Reports, but with the added advantage of ad hoc reporting capabilities.

Retail Uses RFID to Enable Cold Chain Monitoring
Like most grocery retailers, Hy-Vee is faced with the challenge of providing the highest quality products to its shoppers. Shoppers want the longest possible shelf life from perishable products and expect a consistent product experience each time they shop. Controlling the quality of products sold leads to shopper loyalty, which is of paramount importance to the success of Hy-Vee. Before products arrive in stores, Hy-Vee's distribution centers (DCs) handle items including dairy products, fresh meats, seafood, deli items, produce and frozen goods, all of which have different temperature needs and sensitivities. During transit from suppliers to DCs, Hy-Vee has limited visibility and temperature management abilities due to large amount of supplier managed transportation. For instance, during a week-long transit, a supplier's carrier equipment may malfunction, causing an item to thaw and then refreeze once repairs are made. Hy-Vee sought help from TempTRIP, an RFID solution provider that focuses on shipping, storage, receiving, and temperature control. TempTRIP's EPC RFID tags use Impinj chips to monitor and report temperature readings throughout the shipping and receiving process. The tags can also be re-configured and re-used, a unique feature within the current market of temperature monitoring devices.

Mitsubishi sought to improve supplier relationships on a global basis and to offer an easy-to-use solution to interact with them. In August 2004, Mitsubishi selected Covisint’s platform to help improve sharing of information and collaborative business processes with its global suppliers.
