About The Customer
Equicapita is a private equity firm with more than $300 million in assets under its management. The firm specializes in acquisitions of financially-sound companies in the $5 million to $50 million range. These companies are big enough to create a long-term track record and economic moat, but small enough for Equicapita to add their expertise to take the companies to the next level. Equicapita has 13 companies in its portfolio, giving the firm diversification across industries, sectors, and geographies. The firm uses Domo at the head office level to consolidate the financial information of its different holdings.
The Challenge
Equicapita, a private equity firm with over $300 million in assets under its management, was facing challenges in tracking the success of its diverse portfolio of 13 companies. Each company measured success differently and delivered its reporting in significantly different formats. This resulted in each company spending about three days each month on a manual reporting process that involved collecting data, normalizing it, consolidating it, and then creating reports for the board. The firm was also looking for ways to use data to help the companies under its umbrella work smarter.
The Solution
Equicapita implemented Domo's BI & Analytics product to consolidate the financial information of its different holdings. This helped the firm standardize the information it reviews so it could focus on the insights generated by the data instead of trying to understand what the numbers mean. Domo also became a crucial marketing tool for Equicapita. When pitching to investors, Equicapita shared a custom dashboard that showed non-sensitive information about its portfolio companies. This allowed the firm to pitch investors using the data it had in Domo without worrying that prospective investors would gain access to proprietary business data. In addition to using Domo to manage its portfolio and garner new investors, Equicapita gave each of the companies in its portfolio access to Domo so they could use data to run their own businesses.
Operational Impact
  • Equicapita was able to standardize the information it reviews, allowing it to focus on the insights generated by the data.
  • The firm was able to use Domo as a marketing tool, sharing a custom dashboard with prospective investors.
  • Each company in Equicapita's portfolio was able to use Domo in a way that made sense for them, while ensuring that the data they created was useful to the larger organization.
  • One company in the portfolio was able to consolidate all its data together automatically using Domo, saving 3-4 days of work a month that its finance team used to spend manually consolidating finances.
Quantitative Benefit
  • One company in the portfolio was able to increase earnings by 200% after using Domo to run a what-if analysis on whether it made financial sense to invest $500,000 in a new piece of machinery.
