United Facilities is a third-party logistics (3PL) provider that offers a range of public and contract warehousing, fulfillment, packaging and logistics services to clients in the consumer goods and automotive sectors. Over the past 60 years, the company has expanded from a 125,000 square-foot building to more than 5 million square feet, with operations in 11 cities in the U.S. The company was facing challenges with its warehouse management processes and was looking for a solution that could help it provide better service and greater savings for its customers.
The Challenge
United Facilities, a third-party logistics (3PL) provider, was facing challenges with its warehouse management processes. The company's legacy warehousing system was becoming too expensive to maintain, and it was struggling to provide efficient service and savings for its customers. The company was also dealing with an increase in fractured ordering, where customers place the same orders multiple times a day. This was leading to inefficiencies in the picking process, as workers had to visit the same bays multiple times to pull products for the same orders. Additionally, one of its customers had set an ambitious goal of realizing significant savings over several years.
The Solution
United Facilities turned to JDA Software for a solution. The company implemented JDA Warehouse Management and JDA Warehouse Labor Management, from JDA Software’s Intelligent Fulfillment™ suite, via the JDA Cloud. These solutions allowed United Facilities to introduce new processes that reduced costs and increased productivity. For instance, they developed a new allocation strategy that enabled them to pick orders more efficiently, saving 40 minutes per order. The company also increased inventory visibility for its customers through the creation of an online portal, which retrieves data directly out of the JDA solution database, providing real-time updates on any order. Furthermore, United Facilities used JDA Warehouse Labor Management to define and document standard performance expectations and then measure, track and report the performance of employees, departments and facilities.
