About The Customer
Wohlsen Construction Company, founded in Lancaster, PA in 1890, has been a significant part of the development history in Pennsylvania and its surrounding area for over 130 years. The company has an exceptional track record of construction projects across multiple states including Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Wohlsen is committed to sustainability and continuous technological improvement, which helps them deliver on a wide range of projects. The key to their success is the 'Wohlsen Way' which emphasizes the development of relationships with clients based on expertise and trust. Wohlsen’s ability to honor their client commitment is why they are consistently listed on the ENR 400 and are award winners regionally and nationally.
The Challenge
Wohlsen Construction Company, a renowned construction firm with a history spanning over 130 years, was facing challenges in workforce planning. The Vice President of Innovation at Wohlsen, Ed McCauley, who has been overseeing the successful implementation of technology in the company for over a decade, was finding it difficult to create and implement an in-house solution for workforce planning. The existing tools, which included a homegrown solution and spreadsheets, were not user-friendly and resulted in unreliable data for the company's operational leaders. This was a significant issue as it hindered the company's ability to effectively utilize team members, forecast pipeline needs, and ensure profitable growth.
The Solution
To address the challenges in workforce planning, Wohlsen Construction Company implemented Bridgit Bench in September 2021. Bridgit Bench is a workforce management tool that was used to track about 150 people in the company. Even before the full implementation, the team at Wohlsen was able to recognize the ease of use of Bridgit Bench. McCauley noted that the high-quality data provided by Bridgit Bench was an immediate boon for their business. In addition to providing visibility across the organization, Bridgit Bench also offered insights into Wohlsen's pursuits, something they were not able to do before. This enabled the company to make better business decisions by being strategic about the projects they pursued.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Bridgit Bench brought about significant operational improvements for Wohlsen Construction Company. The tool's ease of use and the high-quality data it provided were immediately beneficial to the business. It offered visibility across the organization, allowing for more effective utilization of team members. Furthermore, it provided insights into the company's pursuits, enabling them to be more strategic in choosing the projects they went after. This improved decision-making process was instrumental in ensuring profitable growth for the company. The tool also helped in forecasting pipeline needs, which is crucial in the construction industry for planning and resource allocation.
