The Challenge
INESPASA, a Spanish engineering company specializing in the aerospace and automotive sectors, faced a significant challenge in maintaining competitiveness in a demanding market. The company needed to deliver high-quality, complex products and components that complied with stringent standards and regulations, all while adhering to tight deadlines and limited budgets. A major challenge was the vertical integration of aerostructures, where adjustments were often required during the production of the first units, despite careful development. The time-consuming and expensive process of developing and testing aircraft component prototypes posed a significant hurdle. INESPASA needed to find faster, more efficient methods, such as multiphysics simulation, to evaluate its aero-structure designs, identify potential issues before they occurred, and ensure the viability of the implemented solutions.
The Solution
INESPASA turned to Altair solutions, specifically the fast structural analysis tool Altair SimSolid®, to address their challenges. This tool allowed the engineers to simulate their aero-structure concepts quickly and virtually evaluate them. The team also utilized Altair® Inspire™ for topology optimization and Altair® MotionSolve® for multi-disciplinary simulations and system level analyses. These tools enabled the engineers to perform multi-physical structural calculations to estimate the stiffness of the aeronautical structural elements and obtain a deformation level. SimSolid allowed them to evaluate different solutions rapidly and efficiently and with a high degree of accuracy to achieve the most suitable design. The topology optimization in Inspire enabled the team to predict the behavior of the main component and achieve an optimal design. The engineers were able to evaluate the level of stresses and the critical paths of the stresses, even without any detailed information initially.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Altair solutions, particularly SimSolid, resulted in several operational benefits for INESPASA. The company was able to address its challenge and find the solution with the best weight-stiffness ratio, optimizing the usability of their aero structure elements. The overall service conditions were also improved. SimSolid’s excellent computing capacities enabled the company to increase the agility of the decision-making process by avoiding late design modifications, which significantly reduced the development time and accelerated innovation. The component can now be manufactured using conventional chip removal techniques. The flexibility of Altair’s unique licensing system allowed the team to diversify its resources and extend the usage of Altair solutions beyond SimSolid, significantly increasing the return on investment.
