Viação Alvorada is part of the Vimeca/Lisboa Transportes consortium, co-owned by Grupo Barraqueiro, the biggest operator in Portugal, and Scotturb. The company was created through the merging of two large public transportation companies in Lisbon. It operates a fleet of 450 vehicles across the Amadora, Cacém, Carnaxide, Oeiras and Sintra regions of Portugal. Recently, Viação Alvorada won a major tender from the AML to operate 33% of the bus transportation in Lisbon, Portugal's largest district.
The Challenge
Viação Alvorada, a major public transportation operator in Lisbon, Portugal, recently won a significant tender from the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML) to manage 33% of the city's bus transportation. This massive operation required efficient planning, scheduling, and rostering of optimal operating scenarios. However, the company faced challenges in managing such a large-scale operation. They were limited by preset preferences and could only implement less than 100 rules, which hindered their flexibility and created a significant amount of manual work. Every duty had to be understood in its specific context, which was time-consuming and inefficient. Additionally, with the Lisbon tender, Viação Alvorada faced increased pressure to be on-time and compliant. They needed an advanced software that ensures no regulations slip through the cracks and that protects them from substantial fines for violations.
The Solution
To overcome these challenges, Viação Alvorada chose Optibus, an end-to-end, cloud-native software platform. Optibus offered a more effective approach by allowing Viação Alvorada to create a set of rules and automate their work. The software replaced manual adjustments with computing power and optimization algorithms, which increased the company's efficiency tenfold and eliminated 95% of manual work. Optibus introduced hundreds of templates and preferences, such as work limitations, layover times and duration, and break preferences, and enabled Viação Alvorada to create detailed, custom events relevant to their operation. The software also ensured 100% compliance with the rules set up by the authorities and unions. If a rule was broken, Viação Alvorada received automatic notifications from Optibus, giving them full visibility into all rules, how they are enforced, and their impact on operations.
