About The Customer
CSC Scandihealth is the largest healthcare IT company in Denmark. They deliver electronic patient record systems to the health sector and nursing records to Danish local authorities. The company also operates many of its customers’ IT systems. This work requires a staff of well-trained IT professionals with healthcare experience. The CSC Scandihealth headquarters is located in Aarhus and the sales office in Taastrup. The company employs a staff of approximately 280 within software development, operations and technical support, consulting, services, sales, and marketing.
The Challenge
CSC Scandihealth aimed to become a market leader in Denmark within electronic patient records, maintain the Nordic countries as a home market, and develop the company into a “Centre of Excellence” within European healthcare. The company needed to choose a new technology for their IT solutions in the 1980s. They wanted an effective development tool suitable for creating a standard system for developing patient records. They studied five different solutions from various suppliers before deciding on Software AG because they offered the most flexible development tools and were easy to communicate with.
The Solution
The development of healthcare solutions is based on the Adabas database system and the development language Natural, both from Software AG. Using these tools, CSC Scandihealth developed three large systems which have been used for a substantial number of years in hospitals and health insurance. These systems are GS, GSåben, and OPUS. OPUS patientforløb and OPUS Booking together make up a completely new patient administration system with a graphical user interface, modern word processing, and new, sophisticated booking and planning features. The work with these products is limited to a small amount of further development and “budding”.
Operational Impact
  • CSC Scandihealth became the largest player in the Nordic countries in terms of turnover and market shares.
  • The health sector is able to coordinate efforts and focus follow-up measures, both in terms of professional efforts and resource allocation using CSC Healthcare’s IT solutions.
  • The systems developed using Software AG's tools have been important for CSC Scandihealth's existence and will continue to be so for a long time.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Approximately 70,000 users of CSC Scandihealth’s HIS systems - GS, GSåben and OPUS.
