About The Customer
DePauw University is a private liberal arts university in Greencastle, Indiana. It has an enrollment of 1,972 students. The school offers 36 majors and an option for designing one's own. DePauw is a member of both the Great Lakes Colleges Association and the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Society of Professional Journalists was founded at DePauw. DePauw is home to both the first modern-day sorority and the two longest continuously-running fraternities in the world.
The Challenge
DePauw University in Indiana underwent a massive administration system upgrade. The school needed to extract student metrics, enrollment, peer groups, and financials from their Oracle database and visualize it in a way that would aid in strategic planning. The data also needed to be accessible to people who don't work with it regularly. Another challenge was the production of a large strategic indicator report that took weeks to compile, bringing together disparate reports from various departments and divisions.
The Solution
Bill Tobin, the Director of Institutional Research for DePauw University, used Tableau to visually analyze the data and then distributed it in reports to the different departments. Tableau was used to facilitate their beginning-of-the-year reporting needs. The strategic indicator report that used to take weeks to produce is now done in Tableau, reducing the time to half a day. The university uses Tableau for everything from student data to analyzing peak periods in class schedules. It also uses Tableau for its Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS) reporting, setting up a report that's exactly in the IPEDS format to simplify the reporting process.
