The Challenge
Crutchfield, a North American retailer specializing in electronics, faced a significant challenge in its IT Services department. The team was tasked with enabling internal users to satisfy customers, which often involved requests for applications like the Firefox browser. However, ensuring the software was set up correctly and kept updated to meet security requirements was a labor-intensive process. Additionally, the team needed a more efficient way to control updates and enforce the company’s proxy policy. The manual approaches they were using, such as editing the config file, were not scalable, leading to inefficiencies and potential security risks.
The Solution
Crutchfield found a solution in PolicyPak, a software solution they learned about at the Microsoft TechEd conference. PolicyPak offered the ability to tweak settings, which was immediately recognized as a valuable tool for controlling applications like Firefox. Crutchfield has been using PolicyPak for years, primarily to administer settings for Firefox and Java, and is considering its use for Google Chrome and some Adobe products. The solution has delivered numerous benefits, including improved user satisfaction and productivity, faster compliance checking, reduced IT workload, and ease of deployment and management. PolicyPak has enabled the IT Services team to protect the integrity and security of the corporate infrastructure while also providing users with the applications they need. It has also empowered the team to quickly verify that the correct Group Policy objects are assigned to individuals or computers, reducing the time spent on compliance checks.
