About The Customer
The customer in this case study is the emergency communications center for a large U.S. county. This center is responsible for providing next-generation 911 services to the residents of the county. The center's IT infrastructure plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of these services. However, the center was facing challenges with its existing IT infrastructure, which was a collection of standalone servers and storage platforms. The infrastructure was becoming increasingly expensive and complex to operate and scale, posing risks to the reliability of the emergency communications services.
The Challenge
The emergency communications center for a large U.S. county was facing challenges with its legacy Dell IT infrastructure. The disjointed IT environment, a collection of standalone servers and storage platforms deployed in a single data center, was becoming increasingly expensive, complex, and risky to operate and scale. The county needed to improve the reliability, economics, and agility of the region’s critical emergency communications infrastructure.
The Solution
After investigating a number of next-generation options including solutions from Nutanix and EMC, the County’s IT Director selected SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure. SimpliVity provides a scalable, modular, 2U building block of x86 resources that offers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure—in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. The County deployed two SimpliVity nodes in its primary data center, replacing two full racks of legacy Dell gear. A redundant SimpliVity configuration ensures continuous availability in the event of hardware failures. A third SimpliVity node in a remote data center provides rapid disaster recovery.
Operational Impact
  • High performance and availability for critical emergency response applications
  • Increased IT service agility; stand up new apps in minutes compared to six weeks with siloed Dell implementation
  • Streamlined system administration and reduced operating expenses
Quantitative Benefit
  • 100% uptime since inception
  • 30% performance improvement for core emergency dispatch applications
