Comune di Avezzano is a municipality in Abruzzo, Italy, with over 43,000 residents. The municipality's offices are based in nine different locations, providing a large number of services. These services range from registering citizens to territory management, and from emergency services (civil protection) to the local police. The municipality's information system is spread across over 300 workstations and is based in two data centers, one core and one dedicated to disaster recovery. The IT infrastructure manages around 30 TB of data, stored in three different appliances; two with 15 TB of capacity each and one used as a redundancy.
The Challenge
Comune di Avezzano, a municipality in Italy with approximately 43,000 residents, faced a significant challenge in strengthening its cybersecurity. The municipality's offices, spread across nine different locations, provide a wide range of services from registering citizens to territory management, and from emergency services to the local police. The information system is spread across over 300 workstations and is based in two data centers, one core and one dedicated to disaster recovery. The municipality was struggling to prevent against increasingly damaging phishing and malware attacks, comply with the new GDPR and AGID rules, react more quickly to cyberattacks, and manage cybersecurity more efficiently to free up IT resources.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Comune di Avezzano turned to Check Point Harmony Mobile. As a satisfied Check Point customer since 2016, the municipality decided to use the Check Point software for its entire security infrastructure, replacing all other security technologies. The Check Point solutions allow Comune di Avezzano to quickly react to threats, analyze HTTPS traffic, check email attachments and implement sophisticated anti-phishing technology. It also provides real-time reporting and threat prevention, giving the municipality full real-time visibility into which data is entering their site and if it is potentially dangerous.
