With over 1,400 employees and 900 endpoints in its IT estate, the city has a significant IT infrastructure to manage. The city's IT environment became more complex during the pandemic, transitioning to a hybrid setup that includes Mac, Linux, and Windows operating systems. The city's IT department, led by Daniel Vera, the Director of Information Technology, has been focused on improving cyber hygiene and security to support its diverse and remote workforce.
The Challenge
The City of Edinburg faced significant challenges in managing a hybrid IT environment that included Mac, Linux, and Windows operating systems. The existing solutions, such as WSUS, left gaps in their Linux and Mac environments, making parts of their IT landscape vulnerable. Additionally, the city struggled with maintaining cyber hygiene and security, relying on outdated, on-prem legacy tools to support remote devices. The need for a comprehensive solution to patch and secure all operating systems became critical, especially with employees working remotely and the increased reliance on off-site devices.
The Solution
The City of Edinburg chose Automox to address its patch management and cybersecurity needs. Automox provided a cloud-based solution that could secure devices such as laptops and tablets used by various city departments, including police, permit, and water inspection units. The implementation was swift, with the city going live in just days and fully setting up the environment within weeks. Automox's cloud-based nature eliminated the need for VPNs to run updates, allowing the IT department to manage and patch devices remotely. Additionally, the city leveraged Automox Worklets to customize automation, manage installed and uninstalled software, and gain visibility into device connectivity. This automation significantly reduced the manpower required for patch management and allowed the city to develop policies around third-party software, closing a significant vulnerability gap.
