Located about 30 minutes north of Atlanta, the Cherokee County School System (CCSD) is the eighth largest in Georgia, encompassing 42 schools and centers. With a staff of 6,000 serving 42,000 students, the IT team manages approximately 40,000 PCs, all running Windows software. The district is committed to enhancing the learning and teaching process by adopting the latest technology and moving towards a virtually paperless environment. This requires a robust and reliable IT infrastructure to support the digital needs of students and educators.
The Challenge
The Cherokee County School District (CCSD) faced significant challenges in managing approximately 40,000 PCs, all running Windows software. The primary issues included ensuring a strong network connection during Windows 10 upgrades, avoiding disruptions during critical tasks like registrations and test submissions, and managing the aggressive update schedule of the Windows 10 Servicing Model. The IT team needed a solution that could handle these challenges efficiently without causing interruptions to the educational process.
The Solution
To address these challenges, CCSD partnered with 1E to utilize their Nomad solution, part of the Windows Servicing Suite (WSS). Nomad offered a more efficient and reliable peer-to-peer (P2P) content distribution method compared to Microsoft's options, which often faced disruptions. By using 1E's solution, CCSD was able to significantly reduce the time required for Windows 10 upgrades, from 36 hours for 32 machines using manual processes to just 2 hours with Nomad. Additionally, 1E's WSS enabled CCSD to automate the upgrade to UEFI across multiple hardware platforms, enhancing security and ensuring that endpoints were patched and secure.
