About The Customer
Central New Mexico (CNM) Community College is the largest community college in New Mexico. Since its inception, CNM has delivered strong career-technical programs. It offers focused curriculum in math, science, and engineering; business and information technologies; applied technologies; and communication, humanities and social services to prepare students for rewarding careers upon graduation. With eight locations around Albuquerque, CNM has a large attack surface to defend. The IT and security teams work closely to protect users, data, and other assets from cyber threats.
The Challenge
Central New Mexico (CNM) Community College, the largest community college in New Mexico, faced a significant challenge in managing its multiple security defenses. The college needed to keep new or unknown threats from evading the reputation-based security solutions in place. With eight locations around Albuquerque, CNM had a large attack surface to defend. The IT and security teams worked closely to protect users, data, and other assets from cyber threats. However, the budget of a higher education institution could not increase at the same rate as the proliferation of threats. When it was time to refresh the college's firewall, the IT and security teams looked for a way to improve defenses while simplifying operations.
The Solution
The college evaluated possible solutions from Check Point, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto Networks. After conducting proof of concept tests with the solutions, CNM chose Check Point SandBlast Zero-Day Protection with Threat Emulation and Threat Extraction. This solution increases network security with evasion-resistant malware detection and comprehensive protection from the most dangerous attacks. The Threat Extraction component removes risky content, such as macros or embedded links, and reconstructs documents using only known safe elements. The team deployed Check Point gateways across its locations to protect the college's web browsing and Internet traffic. Email traffic is encrypted and goes directly to Microsoft Office 365. The solution is fully integrated with Check Point Security Management, which allows the team to create security policies, profiles, and configurations from a unified platform for eight Check Point gateways.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Check Point SandBlast Zero-Day Protection has revolutionized the management of security at CNM. Instead of having to manage three different systems and management consoles, now the team creates security policies, profiles, and configurations from a unified platform for eight Check Point gateways. The management requires only minimal input, as the solution is keeping threats out, reducing or eliminating time needed for investigating and remediating problems. The CNM team is also preparing to migrate to the Check Point R80.10 security management platform, which will further simplify management across network and cloud deployments. The Check Point Advanced Technical Account Management (ATAM) services will provide dedicated Check Point engineering support to help maximize the solution's capabilities for their needs.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Unified IPS, web filtering, firewall, and other advanced capabilities into a single system to simplify management
  • Stopped zero-day threats to prevent system infections
  • Gained granular control over user, application, and network resources for increased protection
