The customer is the investment bank arm of a global financial institution. The bank wanted to limit its daily risk exposure across its entire business. The risk analytics team was finding it difficult to assess their daily trading positions across various asset classes - foreign exchange, equities, fixed income, and other special products. They were unable to see how one asset class risk affected another. The bank set out to deliver a daily single consolidated view of its risk position to drill down into individual transactions.
The Challenge
The investment bank arm of a global financial institution was struggling to limit its daily risk exposure across its entire business. The risk analytics team found it difficult to assess their daily trading positions across various asset classes - foreign exchange, equities, fixed income, and other special products. They were unable to see how one asset class risk affected another. The bank set out to deliver a daily single consolidated view of its risk position to drill down into individual transactions. However, they faced several challenges: With over a billion risk points a day, they were struggling to create a consolidated view of risk across their assets. It was impossible to correlate risks across asset classes to understand trends. Analysts were unable to drill down into their data to understand complex transactions. Risk analysis was always late and deficient.
The Solution
The bank used Kyvos, a BI acceleration platform that delivers instant insights on trillions of rows of data, both on the cloud and on-premise data lakes. The risk analytics team prepared data, created a common data schema for all asset classes, and built an OLAP-based semantic layer directly on their data lake. This enabled instant access to transaction-level data on a daily basis. Kyvos' Smart OLAP™ technology helped them quickly build an OLAP cube with 20 days of trading data. Data was added to the cube incrementally each day for analysis, and soon the OLAP cube had 160 days of data — approximately 500 billion transactions. Built-in integration with Tableau, Excel, Spotfire, and Java APIs, helped analysts work in a familiar environment. To ensure that access to the data lake had the same enterprise security that the bank required, Kyvos integrated with the company’s LDAP and Kerberos protocols.

Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
The building was equipped with four end-of-life Trane water cooled chillers, located in the basement. Johnson Controls installed four York water cooled centrifugal chillers with unit mounted variable speed drives and a total installed cooling capacity of 6,8 MW. Each chiller has a capacity of 1,6 MW (variable to 1.9MW depending upon condenser water temperatures). Johnson Controls needed to design the equipment in such way that it would fit the dimensional constraints of the existing plant area and plant access route but also the specific performance requirements of the client. Morgan Stanley required the chiller plant to match the building load profile, turn down to match the low load requirement when needed and provide an improvement in the Energy Efficiency Ratio across the entire operating range. Other requirements were a reduction in the chiller noise level to improve the working environment in the plant room and a wide operating envelope coupled with intelligent controls to allow possible variation in both flow rate and temperature. The latter was needed to leverage increased capacity from a reduced number of machines during the different installation phases and allow future enhancement to a variable primary flow system.

Derek Madison, Leader of Business Financial Support at MasterCard, oversees the validation of transactions and cash between two systems, whether they’re MasterCard owned or not.
