About The Customer
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASAColumbia), located in New York, is a science-based, multidisciplinary, not-for-profit organization focused on transforming society’s understanding of and response to the disease of addiction. Founded in 1992, CASAColumbia’s goal is to do the work needed to prevent, treat, and eliminate substance disease in all sectors of society. The team at CASAColumbia aims to reduce the stigma and effect of substance abuse by educating the public, shaping public policy, and by providing people with tools they need to overcome addiction. The team is engaged in a wide range of research, including studies of the latest science on addiction, performing surveys on attitudes, and examining the impact of addiction and risky substance use.
The Challenge
With a team of researchers holding Masters and PhDs, CASAColumbia employees are often out among the public doing surveys and gathering information, frequently in environments where people are living lives that have been impacted by addiction and substance abuse. CASAColumbia needed to be HIPAA compliant with their research data and also wanted to protect the investment in their laptops. Part of being HIPAA compliant means that CASAColumbia must prove that patient data on laptops hasn’t been compromised, and that data is properly removed from a device and destroyed when the computer is decommissioned.
The Solution
After evaluating a few solutions, CASAColumbia chose Absolute. Absolute provides real-time data tracking, which reduces the human hours needed to track hardware and software details. The solution also includes automated alerts that inform IT of potential security incidents. Additionally, Absolute allows CASAColumbia to freeze machines and delete data if it is at risk, ensuring that they remain HIPAA compliant and that their research data is safeguarded.
Operational Impact
  • Real-time data tracking reduces the human hours needed to track hardware and software details.
  • Automated alerts inform IT of potential security incidents, allowing for quick response and mitigation.
  • The ability to freeze machines and delete data if it is at risk ensures that research data remains secure and HIPAA compliant.
