About The Customer
24 Hour Fitness is a leading health club industry pioneer based in San Ramon, California. The company serves nearly 4 million members in over 400 clubs across the U.S. For more than 30 years, 24 Hour Fitness has been dedicated to helping members change their lives and reach their individual fitness goals. They offer convenient club locations, personal training services, popular group exercise classes, and a variety of strength, cardio, and functional training equipment.
The Challenge
24 Hour Fitness was facing challenges with their existing system. Their orchestration, transformation, and business rules were buried in Java code, making it time-consuming to understand how their systems operated, bring new hires up to speed, and answer use case questions. The complexity of their business rules and the general mistakes that naturally occur in human communication made it time-consuming and error-prone to translate information from the product owners to developers and vice versa.
The Solution
After listing out their requirements for an ESB, 24 Hour Fitness noticed that a BPMN suite fit their needs as well as, if not better than, the more common ESB products. They compared several open source products and decided on Camunda. It provided all the tools they needed to develop and deploy processes within their current development and deployment pipeline. However, to reach their performance goal, they had to disable all history. With history disabled, they lost insight into the usages of their processes and where failures happened. They also faced challenges with the way cockpit and development tools work, as there was no way to drill down into the child processes. Since their processes are layers deep this caused them to spend more time understanding their processes than should be required.
Operational Impact
  • 24 Hour Fitness now has a platform that allows for initial designs to consist of BPMN and DMN in a way that can be easily reviewed by product owners, architects, developers, and development managers.
  • Logic and terminology issues are found during design time.
  • Business domain language provided by the product owners has started to end up in the final implementation.
  • Each BPMN/DMN is code reviewed independently which allows for fine-grained views of steps in the process.
  • They are also able to find bugs, refactor and enhance easier than before.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Currently, they have around 190 processes deployed with over 20 million executed activity instances per day.
  • They also have around 40 DMNs deployed with over 20 million evaluated decision instances per day.
