Practimed is a healthcare provider based in Belgium. They offer a range of healthcare services and have a significant amount of patient data that they need to manage and protect. This includes data from their PACS radiology imaging system, electronic healthcare records system, laboratory analysis applications, and databases. The organization was using a legacy IT environment, which was a mix of standalone servers and storage arrays. This system was becoming increasingly costly and risky to maintain and scale. Furthermore, they had strict legal requirements for securing and archiving patient records, and they needed to ensure that critical data was always available for their medical teams.
The Challenge
Practimed, a Belgian healthcare provider, was facing challenges with its legacy IT environment which was a mix of standalone servers and storage arrays. The existing system had become too costly and risky to maintain and scale. Expanding capacity meant deploying additional servers, storage arrays and SAN switches—an expensive and time-consuming proposition. Moreover, the healthcare provider was unable to meet its RPO/RTO goals using its legacy data protection solution. They had strict legal requirements for securing and archiving patient records, plus they needed to ensure critical data is always available for their medical teams. Therefore, finding a reliable disaster recovery solution had become one of their priorities.
The Solution
Practimed decided to replace its siloed IT implementation with SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure. They installed SimpliVity nodes in two data centers to ensure high availability and enable disaster recovery for its core healthcare applications including its data-intensive radiology imaging and electronic healthcare records systems. The healthcare provider replaced an entire rack of legacy equipment with three 2U SimpliVity nodes. SimpliVity provides a scalable, modular, 2U building block of x86 resources that offers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure—including server, storage and data protection functions—in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. The solution performs inline deduplication, compression and optimization on all data across all phases of the data lifecycle, helping Practimed conserve storage capacity and WAN bandwidth, and accelerate data backup and recovery functions.
