About The Customer
BBVA Compass is a U.S. banking company with 649 branches spread across the country. Nearly 25% of these branches are located in South Texas, with the holding company headquarters in Houston. BBVA Compass is one of the top 25 largest U.S. commercial banks based on deposit market share. The bank serves a wide range of communities and clients across the country. It is committed to ensuring minimal disruption to its operations and services during disasters, to maintain its reputation and trust among its clients. The bank has a dedicated Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery team that works tirelessly to ensure the safety of its employees and the continuity of its business operations during disasters.
The Challenge
In late August 2017, Hurricane Harvey hit the South Texas coast, causing unprecedented flooding and destruction. BBVA Compass, a U.S. banking company with nearly 25% of its 649 branches located in South Texas, was significantly impacted. The hurricane affected employees' personal lives, closed administrative buildings and branches, and knocked ATMs offline. As one of the top 25 largest U.S. commercial banks, it was crucial for BBVA Compass to maintain operations with minimal interruption to serve all communities and clients. Business disruptions, regardless of their size, can have long-lasting and negative effects on both employees and clients if not properly planned for. Therefore, business continuity planning was critical for BBVA Compass to ensure employee safety and business survival during such disasters.
The Solution
BBVA Compass has a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery team that works with a model handed down from the BBVA Group. This model dictates that guidance comes from the top down, while execution happens from the bottom up. Each unit in the bank, including facilities, operations, security, retail, engineering, talent & culture, and more, creates a plan to be implemented in case of loss or disaster. The Business Continuity team oversees this planning and manages the program with the Country Level Continuity team. When disasters like Hurricane Harvey hit, the Business Continuity team, in tandem with its partner StormGeo, monitors the situation for several days and meets with the Country Level Continuity Team regularly to ensure coordination and plan implementation. StormGeo developed a product for BBVA Compass that assesses weather threats according to certain specified levels. When a weather report reaches a certain threat level, the Country Level Continuity Team is pulled together to start getting action plans underway.
Operational Impact
  • The business continuity planning at BBVA Compass proved to be effective during Hurricane Harvey. Despite the challenges posed by the hurricane, including the closure of branches and ATMs, the bank was able to maintain operations with minimal disruption. This was achieved through the diligent work of the Business Continuity team, which monitored the situation closely and coordinated with the Country Level Continuity Team to implement action plans. The team's commitment to their job, despite many of them personally dealing with the fallout of the storm, ensured the success of the business continuity plan. The bank was able to ensure that its customers were minimally impacted by the disaster, thereby maintaining its reputation and trust among its clients.
