About The Customer
Curtin University, located in Western Australia, is the state's largest university with over 46,000 students. The university is renowned for its bold architecture, cultural diversity, innovative use of technology, and beautifully landscaped grounds. The main campus in Bentley spans 120 hectares and includes 341 buildings with a total area of 290,500 square meters. Curtin University is committed to maintaining its expansive greenery and enhancing its facilities management processes through the use of advanced technology solutions.
The Challenge
Curtin University faced the challenge of maintaining its extensive and beautifully landscaped grounds, which include 341 buildings and 290,500 square meters of space. The university needed a more efficient way to manage its landscape assets, including trees, shrubs, and lawns, as well as to streamline the maintenance of its security systems infrastructure. Additionally, Curtin sought to improve project administration for major capital and refurbishment projects, and to optimize space management across its campuses. The university aimed to eliminate manual processes, introduce a project administration tool, and implement GIS capabilities for improved campus mapping and geospatial business intelligence.
The Solution
Curtin University implemented ARCHIBUS functionality to manage its landscape assets and capital projects. By developing a location and CAD-based inventory of all trees, shrubs, and lawns, the university tracked these assets in Autodesk's AutoCAD and linked them with the ARCHIBUS On Demand Work application to issue work orders for unscheduled grounds and landscaping services. ARCHIBUS Preventive Maintenance was employed to schedule and perform routine parks and gardens maintenance. Additionally, the university implemented the ARCHIBUS Web-based Project Management application to assist with project administration for major capital and refurbishment projects. This application serves as a single repository to capture and store all project information, including documents, emails, and financial data imported from the university's finance system. Curtin also extended the use of ARCHIBUS applications to maintain its security systems infrastructure, including access control, intrusion detection, intercoms, and CCTV systems. The university plans to implement mobile handheld devices to assist staff in completing work in the field and to introduce GIS capabilities using ESRI applications and ARCHIBUS for improved campus mapping and geospatial business intelligence.
Operational Impact
  • Curtin University successfully developed a location and CAD-based inventory of its landscape assets, enabling better tracking and management of trees, shrubs, and lawns.
  • The implementation of ARCHIBUS Preventive Maintenance allowed the university to schedule and perform routine parks and gardens maintenance more efficiently.
  • The ARCHIBUS Web-based Project Management application provided a single repository for capturing and storing all project information, streamlining project administration for major capital and refurbishment projects.
  • The university extended the use of ARCHIBUS applications to maintain its security systems infrastructure, improving the management of access control, intrusion detection, intercoms, and CCTV systems.
  • Curtin University plans to implement mobile handheld devices to assist staff in completing work in the field and to introduce GIS capabilities for improved campus mapping and geospatial business intelligence.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Curtin University manages 341 buildings and 290,500 square meters of space using ARCHIBUS applications.
  • The university's landscape assets span over 120 hectares of land.
  • Curtin University has over 46,000 students benefiting from the improved facilities management processes.
