About The Customer
ARYZTA is a leading global foodservice and retail company, known for its wide range of premium bakery products, including breads, cookies, donuts, and flatbread pizza. The company operates 57 bakeries across 29 countries and owns several leading brands in the food industry, such as Otis Spunkmeyer, La Brea Bakery, and Oakrun Farm Bakery. ARYZTA serves multiple channels, including quick-service restaurants, retail and grocery stores, and foodservice companies. Founded in 2001 and based in Zurich, Switzerland, ARYZTA has established itself as a significant player in the global bakery market, producing items under various brands and private labels.
The Challenge
ARYZTA, a global foodservice and retail company with 57 bakeries in 29 countries, faced significant challenges in managing its transportation logistics. The company was using BluJay’s Transportation Management System (TMS) primarily for tendering freight but was not fully leveraging the data and functionality it provided. With the combination of new business significantly increasing volume and severe winter weather impacting the transport industry, ARYZTA needed a more robust solution to manage its logistics operations effectively. The fragmented nature of their business and the need for better data utilization and functionality prompted ARYZTA to seek a more comprehensive solution.
The Solution
To address its logistics challenges, ARYZTA partnered with BluJay Solutions to implement BluJay’s Logistics as a Service (LaaS) in 2015 for its Canadian operations, followed by the US operations in 2016. LaaS is a dedicated team of experts who manage BluJay’s Transportation Management technology on behalf of the shipper. This team includes load planners, a systems admin, a carrier management specialist, and a manager focused on mitigating costs and service risks. By leveraging BluJay’s LaaS, ARYZTA was able to fully utilize the TMS’s capabilities, making data-driven decisions to improve their logistics operations. The LaaS team provided consistency and visibility, allowing ARYZTA to focus on core competencies and dynamic business needs without the burden of training employees to run their supply chain.
Operational Impact
  • BluJay’s LaaS team provided ARYZTA with improved visibility and consistency in their logistics operations.
  • The dedicated LaaS team developed productive relationships with ARYZTA’s customer service and demand planning teams, leading to a smoother and more efficient supply chain.
  • ARYZTA was able to focus more on their core competencies and dynamic business needs, thanks to the support from BluJay’s team of supply chain professionals.
  • The LaaS team launched several projects, including a Carrier Performance Award Program, tracking demand planning order lead time, network design and optimization, and performance reporting on bakery outbound trailer utilization.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 40% reduction in delivery date to payment batch timing for settlement processing in the first year.
  • 2% improvement in on-time delivery in the first year.
  • Multi-stop planning increased by 4.5% in the first year.
  • Use of intermodal increased by 57% in the first year under a continuous improvement project for mode conversion.
