About The Customer
Arirang TV is Korea’s leading global broadcaster and plays a significant role in increasing global understanding of Korea via TV and radio. Since its premiere in 1997 on cable TV, it is now well-loved by people all over the world for its high-quality reports on current events, the economy, culture and history of Korea. It has 112.85 million satellite subscribers in 188 countries worldwide. Arirang TV/Radio is a public service agency that spreads the uniqueness of Korea to the world through cutting-edge broadcasting mediums. Its objective is to burnish Korea's image in international communities and to improve relationships with foreign countries through close cooperation with broadcasting companies overseas. Arirang TV/Radio is dedicated to the development of broadcasting, media, and the advertising industry, along with the advancement of culture and art. Arirang's core business is to deliver programs worldwide via satellite 24 hours a day in order to improve the image of Korea.
The Challenge
Arirang TV, a leading global broadcaster in Korea, faced challenges in providing high-quality video streaming to its overseas users, who represented 85% of total web visitors. The poor network environment made it difficult for these users to watch videos properly. Moreover, the rise in popularity of various devices changed the environment for watching broadcasts, increasing demand for ‘Full Contents Review’ and the expected level of quality. Arirang needed to create an environment where viewers could watch programs smoothly on PCs, mobile devices, and smart TVs, not just via satellite.
The Solution
Arirang implemented CDNetworks’ “Media Acceleration” service in 2012 to provide a variety of high-quality services. Firstly, Arirang was able to stably provide high-quality live broadcasts and the ‘Full Contents Review’ service on its website for both viewers in Korea, and overseas viewers located in 188 countries worldwide. Arirang transmits media content without a disconnection via the quickest and most stable channels available according to the visitors’ location. This was achieved using a platform provided by CDNetworks with content transmission infrastructure in more than 200+ PoPs (Points of Presence) across 90 cities, and without any direct investment in hardware infrastructure. Secondly, users can now enjoy broadcast content on various mobile devices as well. Users are now able to watch programs on smartphones and tablet PCs anytime and anywhere using the mobile web developed by Arirang. Arirang currently transmits content via its high-definition video service to smart TVs and set-top boxes using CDNetworks’ media transmission service. CDNetworks offers media services optimised for users by applying the “Adaptive Streaming” method in which it automatically transmits media file pieces with a bit rate that is optimised to the user’s network environment. Thirdly, Arirang uses an analytics system that assesses video viewing patterns to improve Arirang’s marketing and services based on the program viewing time and statistical data by country. CDNetworks provides detailed statistics, including traffic profiles and unique visitors via our online ‘Customer Portal’. It enables administrators to easily find and set up desired dashboards via a simple and intuitive UI.

Vodafone Hosted On AWS
Vodafone found that traffic for the applications peak during the four-month period when the international cricket season is at its height in Australia. During the 2011/2012 cricket season, 700,000 consumers downloaded the Cricket Live Australia application. Vodafone needed to be able to meet customer demand, but didn’t want to invest in additional resources that would be underutilized during cricket’s off-season.
