About The Customer
Scott Equipment has been a leading provider of construction equipment in the Southern states since 1939. Headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana, the company operates 18 locations across five states. As an authorized dealer of over 20 top manufacturers, Scott Equipment offers equipment sales and rentals, supported by a vast parts inventory and certified service technicians. Over the decades, Scott Equipment has grown significantly, expanding its digital footprint alongside its physical operations. The company now relies heavily on digital assets, emails, and networks, making cybersecurity a critical aspect of its business continuity. Despite having a lean IT team, Scott Equipment has been proactive in addressing its cybersecurity needs, especially after experiencing phishing attacks and recognizing the looming threat of ransomware.
The Challenge
Many organizations that were previously analog-only and brick-and-mortar first have found themselves digitizing more and more as technologies and business needs change. This digitization helps the business grow and thrive, but it also widens an attack surface and creates new cyber threats that weren’t previously present. Many organizations in this position find themselves behind the curve when it comes to cybersecurity, IT staffing, and proactive security measures. They are innovating when it comes to their business model, but struggling to stay ahead when it comes securing and expanding their IT environment. Scott Equipment is a perfect example of that kind of organization. The construction equipment company has been providing the best heavy-duty construction equipment, working with world-class manufacturers, and providing equipment servicing since before cyber threats were a common problem. But as Scott Equipment has grown over the decades, so has their digital footprint. Now the company relies just as much on emails, networks, and digital assets as it does bulldozers and cranes. Keeping their networks and IT systems protected is now as critical for their business continuity as their ability to provide great equipment and customer service. But with a lean IT team, the organization has not been able to meet the security demands of a changing business landscape. Five years ago, Scott did not have multi-factor authentication for their Microsoft Office accounts. That oversight resulted in accounts being compromised through phishing attacks. For the small IT team, it was a lot to clean up and a major wake-up call about their cybersecurity and lack of control. They immediately implemented new security measures, including MFA, and started re-prioritizing security efforts. But as that incident lived in their memory, another threat started looming on the horizon: ransomware.
The Solution
Arctic Wolf’s vendor-neutral approach allowed for fast onboarding with Scott Equipment, without the need to change workflows or install new technologies. Scott Equipment utilizes three Arctic Wolf solutions: Managed Detection and Response, Managed Risk, and Managed Security Awareness. A key component of these solutions is the Concierge Security Team (CST), which has been instrumental in helping Scott Equipment recognize and understand threats, as well as set priorities for future security improvements. One notable incident involved the Arctic Wolf Platform detecting anomalous activity that could be a precursor to a ransomware attack. The CST was able to remotely contain the device, disconnect it from the network, and contact the IT team within minutes. This incident highlighted the effectiveness of Arctic Wolf’s Managed Detection and Response in stopping potential threats. Additionally, Arctic Wolf Managed Risk has provided Scott Equipment with bi-weekly meetings, action items, and strategic guidance to address key vulnerabilities and implement risk management plans. The company has also invested in Arctic Wolf Managed Security Awareness, which offers frequently updated content and micro-learning sessions to improve employee cybersecurity awareness.
Operational Impact
  • Complete visibility across the entire network to comprehensively assess risk and quickly respond to threats.
  • Improved security posture through ongoing guidance and partnership with the Concierge Security Team.
  • Fully managed employee security awareness program reduces the administrative burden on the IT team.
  • Bi-weekly meetings with action items and strategic guidance to address key vulnerabilities and implement risk management plans.
  • Vendor-neutral approach allowed for fast onboarding without the need to change workflows or install new technologies.
