O'Neill, founded by Jack O'Neill in 1952, is a pioneering company in the surf industry. Jack O'Neill invented the wetsuit to extend his surf sessions in Northern California's cold waters. The company has a rich history of innovation, including the first neoprene surf wetsuit, wetsuit booties, leashes, board bags, and stitchless board shorts. The Challenge
The existing infrastructure at O'Neill presented several limitations that needed to be resolved to maintain their ambitious agenda. The applications delivered to employees' desktops and laptops were presented through a Citrix XenApp 5 platform, including a mission-critical ERP application and a global product data management application. However, the previous workspace management solution from a Dutch vendor had several limitations and restrictions, causing daily issues for both users and IT. Application availability and performance were often unacceptable due to memory management issues in the ERP application within the Citrix XenApp environment. This prevented other business applications from launching, reducing user productivity and increasing helpdesk calls. Additionally, users experienced long login times due to the limitations of the previous workspace management solution, with login times approaching 2 minutes. This was a significant user dissatisfaction issue. Furthermore, the previous solution did not provide the flexibility needed for user settings, making it difficult for IT to provide exceptions and specific user environment policies. To address these challenges and improve user management, O'Neill decided to assess other alternatives, with AppSense being the obvious choice.
The Solution
By deploying AppSense, O'Neill introduced a workspace management platform that addressed all prioritized issues and provided additional capabilities for future IT projects. The use of AppSense Environment Manager allowed the IT organization to centrally manage and deploy all user settings with the flexibility to apply exceptions where needed. Previously, rebuilding and reprovisioning a corrupted Citrix server took days, but with AppSense, a new server could be re-provisioned within hours. This resulted in significant efficiency gains and time savings for O'Neill. A key user benefit introduced by AppSense Environment Manager was the reduction in logon times, from 2 minutes to under 25 seconds. This personalized, fast, and consistent desktop experience made users productive regardless of their location or device. Additionally, AppSense Performance Manager allowed for granular management of ERP application memory usage, ensuring that other applications could always be launched in parallel. This greatly increased user satisfaction and contributed to a 25% reduction in helpdesk calls. The use of AppSense Performance Manager also resulted in direct cost savings by avoiding additional investments in server hardware and memory expansions, as application performance and server availability improved.

As of 2014, AK-Centralen has over 1,500 Danish supermarkets equipped, and utilizes 16 operators, and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. AK-Centralen needed the ability to monitor the cooling alarms from around the country, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each and every time the door to a milk cooler or a freezer does not close properly, an alarm goes off on a computer screen in a control building in southwestern Odense. This type of alarm will go off approximately 140,000 times per year, equating to roughly 400 alarms in a 24-hour period. Should an alarm go off, then there is only a limited amount of time to act before dairy products or frozen pizza must be disposed of, and this type of waste can quickly start to cost a supermarket a great deal of money.

Supermarket Energy Savings
The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment. Most importantly, a single meter solution could never identify root cause of energy consumption changes. This approach never reduced the number of truck-rolls or man-hours required to find and resolve issues.
