About The Customer
The Tyler Independent School District (ISD) serves most of Tyler, Texas, the city of Noonday, and rural areas in west central Smith County. It is one of the largest districts east of Dallas, encompassing more than 31 locations, 18,000 students, 1,300 teachers, and over 1,200 staff members. The district is committed to improving the quality of student education, which includes upgrading its desktop technology to provide a better learning environment. The district's IT team, including system engineer Daryl Kisosondi, plays a crucial role in managing and implementing technology solutions to meet the district's educational goals.
The Challenge
The Tyler Independent School District (ISD) faced significant challenges with its aging desktop infrastructure, which included computers that were at least six years old, with some being as old as 14 years. These outdated systems led to various issues, such as extremely long logon times, which hindered the educational experience for students. The district aimed to improve the quality of student education by upgrading its desktop technology. However, the situation became more complicated when the district faced a $5 million budget cut, which forced them to scale down their initial VDI deployment target from 4,000 desktops to 2,500. Despite the budget constraints, the district needed to replace nearly all of its student computers, including those in video editing classes and labs, and also address the aging machines used by teachers and administrative staff.
The Solution
To address the challenges posed by the aging desktop infrastructure and the $5 million budget cut, Tyler ISD decided to deploy Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) as a cost-effective solution. The district chose AppSense Environment Manager to ensure a consistent and personalized user experience for students and staff. AppSense allowed users to customize their desktops and add printers, making the transition to VDI seamless. Additionally, AppSense provided capabilities beyond personalization, such as deploying and managing printers, customizing desktops by location, fixing vendor bugs, making changes to applications, and applying policies by individual lab or user group. This comprehensive solution enabled Tyler ISD to optimize its VDI environment despite budget constraints and improve all aspects of VDI management.
Operational Impact
  • The deployment of VDI with AppSense Environment Manager allowed Tyler ISD to deliver a consistent and personalized user desktop experience for students and staff.
  • AppSense improved all aspects of VDI management, including deploying and managing printers, customizing desktops by location, fixing vendor bugs, making changes to applications, and applying policies by individual lab or user group.
  • The district was able to replace nearly all of its student computers, including those in video editing classes and labs, with repurposed Dell computers and Samsung zero clients for administrative staff.
  • Teachers received VXL thin clients during the conversion process, addressing the issue of aging machines and reducing the need for frequent battery replacements.
  • AppSense became the go-to tool for implementing any changes required by students, ensuring that the VDI environment met the district's needs and expectations.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The initial VDI deployment target was scaled down from 4,000 desktops to 2,500 due to a $5 million budget cut.
  • Ninety-five percent of student clients were replaced with repurposed Dell computers.
  • The district spent thousands of dollars each year on batteries for teacher laptops, which was addressed by providing VXL thin clients.
