About The Customer
Engie Mexico is a subsidiary of Engie, a global energy and services group. The company is committed to bringing energy to the people of Mexico, serving more than 2.5 million residential and industrial customers. With over 950 direct employees, Engie Mexico is a significant player in the Mexican energy market. The company aspires to be a socially responsible organization by delivering carbon-neutral energy solutions. Despite its success, Engie Mexico faced challenges with its data infrastructure, leading to the initiation of the Da Vinci project.
The Challenge
Engie Mexico, a subsidiary of Engie, is a leading energy provider in Mexico, serving over 2.5 million residential and industrial customers. Despite its significant presence, the company faced a major challenge in managing its data infrastructure. The existing system was segregated and comprised of extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes, data warehouses, and Excel files. This fragmented approach resulted in no single source of truth, making it difficult for the company to track changes across various data sources. The lack of a unified data infrastructure hindered the company's ability to cater to a wide range of business requirements and build new business use cases. This situation led to the initiation of the Data Virtualization and Capability Integration (Da Vinci) project, Engie Mexico's first major data-centric implementation project.
The Solution
The solution to Engie Mexico's data management challenge was the implementation of the Denodo Platform. This platform was placed at the center of the new data infrastructure, integrating data from disparate sources in real time. It provided a logical, agile, and flexible way to source, integrate, and deliver data. The Denodo Platform played a crucial role in the Da Vinci project, enabling the creation of a data infrastructure that could cater to a wide range of business requirements. The implementation of the Denodo Platform significantly improved Engie Mexico's digital footprint and reduced the time-to-delivery of data integration projects. Within the initial six months of the project, more than seven data integration projects were delivered. In the first eight months of 2021, 11 projects in the area of descriptive analytics for data science were delivered.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Denodo Platform and the initiation of the Da Vinci project have brought about significant operational improvements for Engie Mexico. The company now has a unified data infrastructure, which has eliminated the challenges of managing segregated data sources. The new system provides a single source of truth, making it easier to track changes across various data sources. This has not only improved data management but also enabled the company to cater to a wide range of business requirements and build new business use cases. The company has also seen a cultural shift towards data democratization, with users now able to access the data they need through self-service. Overall, the project has driven Engie Mexico towards becoming a data-driven company.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Improved the delivery of full data integration projects from three months to two weeks
  • Enabled self-service for users to access the data they want, leading to a culture of data democratization
  • Reduced data integration costs with a shorter time to delivery
