About The Customer
Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University is located in Montréal, Québec. It is Canada’s largest university-based center for the study of film animation, film production, and film studies. The school admits 250 undergraduate and graduate students each year. The school has two digital cinemas on-site; one with a Barco projector and the other with a Christie projector, both requiring Digital Cinema Packages for screening. The school's environment is now 99% digital.
The Challenge
Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec, Canada's largest university-based center for the study of film animation, film production, and film studies, faced several challenges. The school needed to update its aging workflows, moving from 90% film-oriented workflows to a 99% digital landscape. The technical support team was very limited in staffing. Multiple buildings on campus needed connectivity with third-party switches. Different client operating systems were attached to a single pool of storage.
The Solution
The school implemented a Rohde & Schwarz Turnkey Video and Storage Solution powered by DDN Technology. This solution allowed students to focus on creativity rather than worrying about the technology. It also enabled students to be immediately productive with experience in the best color correction, cameras, DCP, and deliverable technologies when hired by top production houses. The solution also allowed students to work on their 3D, 2K, and 4K media files directly from the SAN at lightning-fast speeds. The Clipster feature enabled support of the majority of camera RAW files format in real-time or faster, correction of metadata errors in media, and rapid transcoding to any delivery format.
