About The Customer
Shoppers Stop Limited is a pioneer of modern retailing in India. The company launched the concept of “one-stop shopping” in 1991, providing high-quality merchandise and excellent customer service at its large-format department stores. Six years later, the retailer had outgrown its legacy transaction and technology systems, and turned to JDA Software to help support the expansion of its retail model. Today, Shoppers Stop is India’s largest department store chain, and together with its affiliated companies, operates more than 65 large-format department stores, 80 Crossword bookstores, and 10 hypermarkets, airport retail and home-concept stores.
The Challenge
Shoppers Stop, India's largest department store chain, was facing challenges with its store replenishment process. The retailer was using a fixed-stock method of replenishment, which did not always ensure that the best-selling stores received new styles first. In some categories, inventory was over- or under-stocked, and stock transfers between stores added to internal supply chain pressures and costs. As the overall scale of the business grew, store replenishment was becoming more cumbersome. Shoppers Stop needed an automated, intelligent solution that would ensure that its stores receive the right amount of merchandise that will sell, and enable it to manage store replenishment by category.
The Solution
Shoppers Stop selected JDA Allocation, which enables it to leverage product sales data to establish the ability of a store to sell product before replenishing. For new products, historical sales data of similar products can be used to determine first-time store replenishment. This solution has resulted in fresher looking merchandise in stores, and by selling more merchandise at full price, Shoppers Stop has experienced fewer markdowns and better margins. Since implementing JDA Allocation in all of its stores, Shoppers Stop has realized impressive results. The retailer has seen a marked improvement in inventory turns, which has contributed significantly to the increase in sales at the chain level. An even inventory distribution across store locations has reduced instances of over-stocking and inter-store transfers, thereby resulting in greater supply chain efficiencies.
Operational Impact
  • Standardized merchandise allocation across all stores
  • Significant improvement in inventory turns
