The bakery is a local landmark in Northwich, known for its iconic cooling towers with glass walls showcasing freshly baked loaves on conveyor belts. Roberts Bakery uses the finest ingredients to produce delicious bread and other baked goods, delivering them across the UK to convenience stores, large multiples, and food service customers. With a fleet of 50 to 60 vehicles on the road at any given time, the bakery serves over 2000 customers, ensuring that their products reach the shelves as fresh as possible.
The Challenge
Roberts Bakery, a historic bakery founded in 1887, has grown to become the fourth largest supplier of branded bread in the UK. With a large and varied fleet of 50 to 60 vehicles on the road at any given time, the bakery faces the challenge of delivering fresh baked goods with a short shelf life to over 2000 customers across the UK. The production team often sets the schedule to meet customer requirements, which can be challenging for the transport team that requires real-time oversight and flexibility. The primary goal is to ensure that the baked goods are delivered quickly, safely, and efficiently, maintaining their quality from the oven to the customer's table.
The Solution
Roberts Bakery partnered with Microlise to deploy Fleet Performance and Journey Management solutions. Fleet Performance allows managers to monitor driving through an A to G rating system, assessing criteria such as idling, acceleration, braking, cornering, cruise control usage, and speed. This data enables targeted driver training and management by exception. The Microlise Driver Performance Management (DPM) app was also made available to all 160+ drivers, allowing them to access their scores via a smartphone app, fostering a competitive and self-monitoring environment. Additionally, Journey Management is used to monitor trip status in real-time, facilitating proactive customer service and improving route planning through "planned vs actual" route comparisons. The Microlise Remote Digital Tachograph Download module was also deployed to manage drivers' hours compliance and reduce administrative time.
