About The Customer
Santex SpA is a significant player in the Italian market for the production of medical devices for medication, orthopedics, incontinence, and the provision of pre and post-sales assistance services with home distribution. Starting from May 2016, the company also ventured into the production of disposable devices for the operating room (MSO). In a bid to improve the energy performance of the company and the environmental impact of its products, Santex implemented a management system in compliance with ISO 50001 requirements for Energy Management and ISO 14040 and 14044 for LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and EPD® (Environmental Product Declaration) processes. These processes are actively used by Santex to evaluate, monitor and improve environmental performance.
The Challenge
Santex SpA, a major player in the Italian market for the production of medical devices, was seeking to improve the energy performance of the company and the environmental impact of its products. To achieve this, Santex implemented a management system in compliance with ISO 50001 requirements for Energy Management and ISO 14040 and 14044 for LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and EPD® (Environmental Product Declaration) processes. These processes were actively used by Santex to evaluate, monitor and improve environmental performance. However, the company faced challenges in generating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) autonomously and rapidly for new products.
The Solution
Sphera, a leading global provider of Integrated Risk Management software and information services, provided a solution to Santex's challenge. They developed the EPD Creator Tool for autonomous EPD generation without the need for internal LCA competence. The tool was automated with GaBi, GaBi Envision Software and DBs support. Sphera also supported the Process EPD Certification with the EPD Creator Tool. They provided a user-friendly LCA Tool for evaluation and comparison of product and process improvement scenarios. Additionally, Sphera trained the internal “EPD Team,” transferred know-how, and trained the internal LCA Team on the product sustainability path. This enabled Santex to develop internal LCA competency and achieve efficiency in environmental data collection.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
