The Challenge

O2, the Czech Republic’s largest integrated telecommunications provider, faced the challenge of meeting the growing connectivity demands driven by the rapid increase in tech startups, e-commerce companies, and software developers. Additionally, the explosive demands driven by 4G/LTE and video streaming added to the complexity. O2 also aimed to increase network diversity for reliability and to foster competition among providers. The solution needed to be scalable to meet the ever-increasing demand while reducing complexity.

The Solution

To address the growing demand, O2 upgraded its core technology with 100G capacity. They sought carriers who could provide 100G on their own backbones, avoiding those relying heavily on leased networks due to economic and reliability concerns. Telia Carrier emerged as the clear choice, being the first backbone provider to offer 100G-enabled networks in both Europe and North America. Telia Carrier's global backbone allowed for one-hop connectivity to key destinations. The upgrade from 10G to 100G was straightforward, involving contingency plans and a switch that took less than a day without service interruption.

Operational Impact

O2 achieved a multiple provider strategy with peering in place for over 0.5Tbit/s of capacity managed primarily on 100G ports.
The network and infrastructure management and traffic engineering were greatly simplified.
O2 can switch from 5 x 10G ports to a 100G port as soon as traffic exceeds 50G, opening up additional bandwidth for customers.
Being 100G enabled both nationally and internationally simplified their routing policy, with traffic split between providers according to the shortest path.
Multiple providers provided the desired network diversity and cost competitiveness.
