Smart Traps - Synapse Wireless Industrial IoT Case Study
Smart Traps
Well known for their mouse and rat traps, Victor pest control constantly attempts to use new technology to create better products for their customers. Seeing an opportunity to improve their product offering, the product developers at Victor decided to create an intelligent mousetrap that lets users know that it caught a mouse—thus preventing the user from having to check the trap every day. In order to make this happen, Victor needed a way to send signals from battery-powered traps to an email or cellphone. Because the traps run on batteries, Victor would need something low-powered but could still send a strong signal inside a building.

Top Hospital Working to Develop a “Digital Companion” that Could Save Lives
To help more people live longer, cardiologists need data such as electrocardiogram (ECG) readings or blood pressure measurements collected over weeks, months, or even longer. To make such data collection possible, a consortium of 37 organizations built an Internet of Things (IoT) prototype called Digital and Analog Companions for an Aging Population (digilog). Using a fitness band and tiny wearable sensors, digilog captures and sends a patient’s ECG readings and other health measurements to Microsoft Azure. There, IoT and other services transform disparate medical data into easy-to-read summative dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs), which users and their physicians can view from a mobile app or a web portal. As digilog undergoes extensive tests, its creators are excited by its potential to save lives, lower healthcare costs, and provide needed care in remote and underdeveloped regions.

Diesel Direct Uses the Cloud to Persevere Through Power Outages - Virtustream (DELL) Industrial IoT Case Study
Diesel Direct Uses the Cloud to Persevere Through Power Outages
The company relied on the expertise of a staff of experienced billing agents, account managers and administrative specialists whose primary tools were one giant customer database built on Microsoft Access, Exchange email and the anachronistic but effective use of paper invoices delivered via fax or snail mail. This process was effective until Irene made it clear that if power went out in the main office Diesel Direct wouldn’t be able to send out that fast flurry of invoices every day. And without that, their cash-flow situation would be greatly impacted very quickly.Their clients, fleet managers for distribution companies, understand quickly how Diesel Direct can save them money by letting them trade a few extra cents per gallon of fuel for the FTE cost of having their own people handle the fuelling and maintenance and reporting, plus the cost of having the truck off the road while they’re doing it. Diesel Direct’s services allow them to skip most of that. The model doesn’t require a lot of technology, but Diesel Direct can’t accomplish anything if its minimal IT infrastructure is offline for any length of time.

Multifunctional labels in Steel Service Centers
Until 2007, the Kerschgens Group handled the processes that involve moving goods into and out of stock like many companies in the industry. The daily work of the logistics personnel was characterised by delivery lists and slips of paper. However, the market is changing, and so are the requirements. Whereas the company used to sell mainly standard products, the need arose to put together orders made up from many different individual parts. And working with lots of bits of paper frequently led to time being spent on searching and errors with goods movements. A new concept had to be developed to optimise the process

Smart Robotics: secure IIoT connection to robots with IXON Cloud
After getting started in 2015, Smart Robotics immediately started thinking about remote access. “It is very important to us that we can remotely access all our systems, to see how they’re behaving,” Heico says. Consequently, Smart Robotics aims to get in touch as soon as something goes wrong, way before the customer can reach out to them.At first Smart Robotics considered whether they should develop their own solution, or if it was better to outsource the development and look for an external partner. Their conclusion? Confidence in the ability to set up a highly secure connection turned out to be of utmost importance for Smart Robotics. “Securely collecting the data and getting remote access to our systems,” Heico explains. “In a way that the customer is confident that there won’t be a security breach as a result of an open network.”

CalAmp LMU-3030 and FleetOutlook Reduce Downtime and Improve Fleet Availability
When a Tadano crane out in the field requires service, a Tadano service engineer must drive to the work site to check and maintain the crane. Because these trucks are located throughout North America at service engineers’ homes, it can be difficult to track truck locations and schedules. Since long periods of downtime are unacceptable to most customers, fleet availability and proximity to their location plays a big part in resolving issues quickly.Low visibility into the fleet was just one reason Tadano began looking for a fleet management service. In addition, because most of the service vehicles drive 60,000-80,000 miles or more in just two years, it is important for Tadano to maintain their fleet to ensure readiness to meet service requests.

Brooks Brothers' Solution Hosted By AWS
Brooks Brothers frequently launches new business initiatives, which helps the company stay competitive in the retail industry. The organization needed a more agile way of quickly testing these new projects. “When we embark on a new initiative, as with anything in the retail industry, it has a short timeframe from the initial idea to solving business needs, as driven by consumer preferences,” says Philip Miller, director of infrastructure and technical engineering at Brooks Brothers. “We’re very good at deploying technology that will exist for the long term in our data center, but we’ve struggled to spin up resources for testing new projects. We wanted to become more agile in moving concepts into an environment we could easily access and possibly move into production.”The organization was also seeking a more cost-effective way to manage its SAP HANA in-memory database management system, which would support a new customer relationship management (CRM) application. “We wanted to save money when we implemented the CRM system on SAP HANA, and we also wanted to be able to test out new projects on that platform,” says Miller.

Wind turbines using digital technology - Hitachi Industrial IoT Case Study
Wind turbines using digital technology
Issues involved in expanding commercialization of wind powerIn 2015, the worldwide capacity of renewable energy facilities exceeded that of coal-fired power.*1 With the aim of creating a low-carbon society, in July 2012, Japan put into effect the feed-in tariff scheme for renewable energy, stimulating the construction of solar and wind farms. In 2016, the full liberalization of the electrical retail business resulted in an increasing number of companies planning either to enter the power generation field or to expand their business. These market conditions engendered a need for the development, design, manufacturing, and sales of wind turbines optimized for Japan's environmental conditions. Utilities considering entering the field of wind power also sought assistance in the streamlining of maintenance and other such business operations.

Mitsubishi Electric's Edge Computing Solution Powered by Wind River VxWorks
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, a global leader in factory automation (FA) applications, identified edge computing as a critical component of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The company aimed to enhance device and data security, reduce data traffic to the cloud, and enable faster response to network or device issues. In 2018, Mitsubishi Electric launched its first line of industrial hardware products designed for edge computing, the MELIPC Series. The primary development goals for MELIPC were to support the type of edge computing promoted by Mitsubishi Electric and to introduce advanced vision technology for device control. The flagship computer of the MELIPC line, the MI5000, was designed to combine real-time equipment control with high-speed data collection, processing, diagnosis, and feedback in a single machine. However, the development team needed a real-time control platform that could seamlessly integrate real-time control with proven analytic and diagnostic applications.

Rapid Sensor Deployment
The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics highlighted an issue facing much of China: infrastructure construction is not keeping up with population demand. China is one of the fastest growing vehicle markets in the world with an estimated 20,000 new vehicles hitting the road each day. The problems at the Olympics were exasperated by an increase in tourist traffic and a need to quickly and easily install an intelligent transportation system powerful enough to handle Beijing’s tough traffic problems. The systems created for the Olympic Games needed to be highly accurate and reliable. Detection devices also had to accurately detect traffic over eight to 10 lanes. Inductive loops take too long to install and were unreliable and unable to adapt to changing traffic patterns.
