Tray Identification at the Kennametal Drill Plant - S+P Samson Industrial IoT Case Study
Tray Identification at the Kennametal Drill Plant
Kennametal's high quality drill bits along with their associated aluminium trays where they are arranged go through a thorough cleaning process involving ultrasound, damp and vacuum cleaning processes after machining is performed. Before entering this washing facility, the order documents and the tray are separated and then re-allocated after cleaning. A work step that involves a risk as analyses have shown that, on occasion, trays and order documents were allocated incorrectly after cleaning. Drills went through coating processes that were supposed to be used for a different order. Hence, there was a need to eliminate mix-ups altogether.

IoT Connectivity Creates Worldwide Opportunities: A Case Study on Micro Systems and Eseye
Micro Systems S.R.L., a specialist in embedded electronics solutions, designs and manufactures process control and user interface boards for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) across various sectors. One of their core capabilities is building complete, customised IoT ecosystems that help their customers evolve from a product-based business into a service-based business. However, they faced a significant challenge when they launched their first IoT project in 2014 for a customer who needed a bespoke solution that could work anywhere in the world. The customer's new system was being sold globally, which meant that Micro Systems’ solution had to be compatible with multiple network operators across many different countries. This was a complex task, as managing the various networks and frequencies involved would be unworkable. Furthermore, the customer required a single, pocket-sized electronic board that integrated several technologies, including GPS, GSM connectivity, an M2M SIM Card, an RFID module, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, and an I/O system.

Meeting Energy Efficiency Requirements with Voltage Optimization - Utilidata Industrial IoT Case Study
Meeting Energy Efficiency Requirements with Voltage Optimization
Across the nation, utility companies, state regulators and policy makers are considering many potential solutions and strategies for managing an evolving power grid and energy industry. From policy measures like the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan regulations, to the President’s first Quadrennial Energy Review, to infrastructure modernization efforts, utility companies and state regulators are in a period of intense progress and scrutiny. Of these measures, the EPA’s Clean Power Plan is particularly significant. It aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from existing fossil fuel-fired power plants. Citing authority under Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act, the EPA released the final regulations in August 2015, requiring states to develop and submit state plans to achieve the federal emissions reduction goals. The Clean Power Plan also fosters a spirit of state/federal collaboration urging states to work hand-in-hand with each other and the EPA to come to optimal reduction structures. Despite the debate over the legality of the EPA’s proposed plan, utilities and regulatory bodies are already analyzing the cost and benefits of a variety of measures to respond including coal plant conversions, renewable energy investments, energy efficiency programs and more.

IoT Solution Enhances Comfort and Energy Efficiency at Apple Valley Commons Office
75F
Apple Valley Commons, a mixed-use office complex built in 1986, was facing significant comfort and energy efficiency challenges. The building, which houses a variety of businesses, was experiencing extreme temperature imbalances, causing discomfort to employees and clients. Despite outdoor temperatures being consistently high during summers, occupants had to use space heaters to keep warm. The electricity bills from the constant operation of the heat pump were exorbitant. The building's elevator room on the roof was also overheating, reaching temperatures of 130 to 140 degrees, causing the elevator equipment to shut down. The building's existing controls solution did not provide a front end for diagnostics or remote control. The building management was seeking a solution that could address these temperature issues, improve occupant comfort, reduce operational costs, and increase building visibility.

Integrating Systems Modeling with Simulation Helps Ensure Robust Space Debris Re - Altair Industrial IoT Case Study
Integrating Systems Modeling with Simulation Helps Ensure Robust Space Debris Re
On the e.Deorbit proposal, Airbus DS engineers addressed these concerns by using system modeling to simultaneously develop the mission requirements and architectures. They developed a SySML model that integrates the safety and architecture requirements, system capabilities, functional architecture, and concept of operations (CONOPS).Developing the architectures and requirements in parallel helped to validate the requirements at an earlier stage in the project, saving considerable time and money. While this approach was a major step forward, Airbus DS engineers recognized that its benefits were limited by the fact that the domain simulations required to support the development of the architectures were each run manually and separately by engineers responsible for a particular domain. The results from these simulations were later uploaded to a database and used as input parameters for the system model and other simulations. The performance of the entire system for a particular use case is not clear until each of the simulations involved is completed which takes days or weeks. Considerable time and effort are required to simulate the performance of the entire system for even a single case, limiting the number of cases that can be run in the architecture definition phase. This creates the potential for errors and unexpected interactions that cost considerable time and money to correct when they are discovered later during the detailed design stage.

Detecting Cavitation And High Vane Pass Frequency For Pumps
The Condensate Cooling Water (CCW) pump, one of the critical pumps in maintaining steadystate operations, is a horizontal vane pump operating at up to 1650 m3/hr with a discharge pressure of 9 MPa (62 psi) at 986 rpm. Each day this pump is offline costs the plant $250,000 in lost revenue and each failure costs tens of thousands of dollars to execute an unplanned repair. Thus, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) really needed a predictive maintenance solution to detect faults at an early stage and provide a reliable prediction of Remaining Useful Life (RUL)

Revamping EE's Legacy ERP: A Case Study on BT's Strategic Transformation
EE, even after its merger with BT, was operating its ERP estate on legacy infrastructure, hosted on the premises of a third-party supplier. This outdated system resulted in a volume-based operational model, higher time to market, longer delivery cycles, and unsatisfactory customer experience. BT recognized the need for a strategic transformation of these aging ERP systems and sought a partner who could proactively manage application services. The partner was also expected to handle development requirements associated with application management services, drive accountability, and ownership with a time and target-driven transformation of these services. BT's primary goals were to improve customer experience, reduce cycle time, and measure these improvements with precision.
