ArcelorMittal condition monitoring
ArcelorMittal’s rotating assets often operate in harsh environments. A conveyor at the company’s hot strip mill in Ghent, Belgium moves plates of sizzling hot steel along the production process. In conditions like these, traditional proximity-based technologies like vibration and acoustic analysis fail: the sensors can’t handle the high temperatures.“In the steel industry, assets frequently operate in conditions that are not hospitable to sensitive sensor technologies,” says Andy Roegis, ArcelorMittal’s industrial digitalization manager for northern Europe. “The conveyor on our hot strip mill is a critical part of the production process, but it’s virtually impossible to use manual or vibration-based techniques to assess its condition.”

Heat Exchanger Monitoring and End of Cycle Prediction
Predicting end-of-cycle (EOC) for a heat exchanger due to fouling is a constant challenge faced by refineries. Proactively predicting when a heat exchanger needs to be cleaned enables risk-based maintenance planning and optimization of processing rates, operating costs, and maintenance costs. Before using Seeq, the engineer had to manually combine data entries in a spreadsheet and spend hours/days formatting and filtering the content or removing non-relevant data when necessary (for example when equipment was out-of-service).

Providing Proactive Support with Intelligent Smart Services
“For us to maintain low costs and high customer satisfaction while providing improved response times, we need a better, faster way to resolve issues beyond dispatching onsite technicians,” explains Mark Hessinger, Executive Director of Worldwide Service at Gerber Scientific. Gerber faces a continuous need to train new personnel as they are brought into the service organization. A change in strategy for service allows Gerber to build a stronger technical support organization and a more efficient process to bring new field service engineers up to speed. “We have a lot of tenured employees in North America and Europe,” observes Hessinger. “In seven years, the loss of man years will accelerate, so we need to retain product knowledge before it becomes a greater issue and impacts our customers.” Hessinger and his team realized that they needed a solution to remotely connect to their products and identify, diagnose, and resolve issues. Ideally this would happen before their customers even become aware of a problem, reducing the dispatch of onsite technicians or improving first-time fix rates when onsite visits are required. By collecting data from their products deployed in production, the company could begin addressing the aging workforce issue by capturing and retaining information. Collecting information on consumables and parts could automate consumable resupply, optimize spare parts inventory, and enable Gerber to provide true preventive maintenance. “We do not have mean time between failure data because we don’t know how many hours our customers are actually using our products,” says Hessinger. “Some customers use our products a few hours a day, while others use them 24/7. Obtaining actual usage data will help us better plan our spare parts and the consumables required for run times.” Other capabilities identified to help build a business case for their initiative included minimizing product downtime, automating software patch distribution, offering value-added services, providing engineering with product usage data, and delivering remote training on product capabilities for distributors and new technicians.

Video Networking Solution Facilitates Visual Management for Siemens DESIGO
Incorporating video surveillance with SCADA/HMI systems is now a trend for automation applications. In general, the ActiveX Control component is required to embed video images in SCADA/HMI systems. In addition to installing the ActiveX Control components, programming is also required to properly facilitate video displays and control functions. Unfortunately, the kind of programming required can pose problems for automation system integrators because they are not familiar with video technology. Moxa is working with Siemens Taiwan Building Technologies (BT) Department to develop a userfriendly tool with graphical interface for Siemens DESIGO™ system, an up-to-date BA solution of freely programmable management and automation stations for the full spectrum of building services applications, to save time and effort with programming video related functions. System Requirements • Activate live video displays when an alarm is triggered at a remote site. • Remote PTZ camera control is required, including direction control and presets control. • Audio on/off functions

ThinManager Ready Solutions for Factory Management
A medical product company needed to install 230 thin client PCs across four manufacturing plants. Thin clients have been used in offices for many years, but their introduction onto the factory floor has been slow. A thin client network consists of a management computer in a secure, air-conditioned room with back up UPS, whilst on the factory floor there are a number of simple computers which are used to connect to the management computer, thereby removing the need to install individual operating systems and applications on each of the clients whilst also ensuing that there is only one point of failure. The company was looking for a network architecture that would have the lowest maintenance costs and the quickest deployment time. To meet all these needs, each of these sites would have approximately 50 thin clients installed on the factory floor and these would then be connected to a central server located elsewhere on the site. This leaves only one point of maintenance for software updates, security patches and rules for what applications are allowed to run on the thin clients.

Rapid and Simple Installation Provides Access to Critical Data
The customer needed to monitor non-contact alignment and non-contact process temperature in different positions along a 100-meter production line. Space around the line is tight and operators and forklift trucks are passing by constantly. Installation of correctly routed cables from sensors back to the control station would have been expensive and would have taken too long and caused too much disruption to ongoing operations.

Wireless Vibratory Data Acquisition System for Maintenance
In the framework of its predictive maintenance offering, ONEPROD part of the ACOEM group provides monitoring solutions that allow to avoid unexpected breakdowns in industrial production tools. Traditionally ONEPROD was using wired data acquisition systems. However they were costly and hard to install in harsh environments or explosive zones, like in the oil & gas and mining industry. To cover the distance to connect and power the monitoring equipment considerable lengths of cable are required especially in industrial spaces with difficult access. Developing a wireless data acquisition system became a key success factor in the ONEPROD strategy in order to avoid any cabling issue and to improve the safety of the staff in charge of portable measures.
