About The Customer
Change Grow Live is the largest provider of drug and alcohol support services in the UK. The organization, which began as an offender rehabilitation initiative in 1977, has expanded rapidly and now has more than 4,000 staff and 1,500 volunteers. Each year, over 100,000 individuals come to Change Grow Live for structured support, covering everything from overcoming opioid addictions to escaping domestic violence. The organization's programs are supported by a central team of data analysts and scientists, as well as individual teams working with specific services. The organization strives to be agile, responding quickly to changes and supporting its most vulnerable service users.
The Challenge
Change Grow Live, the largest provider of drug and alcohol support services in the UK, was facing challenges in managing and analyzing its vast data. The organization, which supports over 100,000 individuals annually, was relying on Microsoft Excel for creating monthly and quarterly reports to monitor its progress. However, the manual and repetitive nature of processing and analyzing data in spreadsheets was proving to be tedious and error-prone. Furthermore, the organization's rapid growth over the past decade had stretched Excel's capabilities to its limits. The additional ad hoc analysis requests were also straining the resources of the central team of data analysts and scientists, preventing them from focusing on the organization's future or deriving deeper insights from the data.
The Solution
To overcome these challenges, Change Grow Live collaborated with consultancy TrueCue to review its data model and find a suitable solution. The organization chose Alteryx Designer, implementing analytic process automation alongside Tableau for an end-to-end analytics process. This solution pulls data from various sources, including health records, referrals, assessment reports, prescription systems, discharge forms, and Change Grow Live’s case management system, to create holistic views of users and services. Alteryx’s simple user interface proved popular with the team, allowing them to optimize and adapt workflows as the organization’s needs evolved. The implementation of Alteryx Server enabled the organization to automatically run all its workflows together, combining millions of rows of data from various systems and sources. This allowed the leadership to segment the data at service, region, and individual service user level to identify who needs more support and the best way to deliver it safely.

Underground Mining Safety
The goal was to produce a safety system to monitor and support underground mining operations; existing systems were either too simple (i.e. phone line) or overly complex and expensive, inhibiting deployment, and providing little-to-no support in event of an accident. Given the dangerous nature of the mining work environment and the strict regulations placed on the industry, the solution would have to comply with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations. Yet the product needed to allow for simple deployment to truly be a groundbreaking solution - increasing miner safety and changing daily operations for the better.

Joy Mining Systems
Joy equipment faces many challenges. The first is machine integration and control. The business end of the machine has a rapidly-spinning cylinder with 6-inch diamond-studded cutting teeth. It chews through rock at rates measured in tens of tons per minute. The system grinds through the rock in front, creating a rectangular mine tunnel. Hydraulic lifters support the ceiling as the machine moves forward. Automated drills and screws drive 3-ft long screws into the ceiling to stabilize it. The rock and coal fall into a set of gathering "fingers" below the cutting cylinder. These fingers scoop up the rock and coal and deposit it onto a conveyor belt. The conveyor passes under the machine and out the back. A train of conveyor belt cars, up to a mile long, follows the cutter into the mine. The rock shoots along this train at over 400 feet per minute until it empties into rail cars at the end. Current systems place an operator cage next to the cutter. Choking dust (potentially explosive), the risk of collapse and the proximity of metal and rock mayhem make the operator cage a hazardous location.
